Whats Quentin Tarantino doing here

Chungking express - Takeshi Kaneshiro, Tony Leung, Brigitte Lin, Faye Wong

Watched the movie last week. directed by this guy called Wong Kar-Wai based out of HK. heard a lot about this and other movies he had made from a person who has been hunting for a very long time for the Chungking. had briefly attempted seeing another movie of his called 'happy together' a while back (the viewing got aborted minutes into it).

been thinking about the Chungking and couldnt really figure what was about it that clicked. suppose the randomness. today, came across what sofia coppola had to say about 'lost in translation' - "i like movies that aren't so much story-driven, but you feel like you are in place". very apt for Chungking.

super visuals, great photography, cool acting. a knack of capturing the normality of a few people's lives - to the extent that one gets the feeling that the story is being created as the movie goes along. the script did get written a few hours before each days shoot! and a bonus: a very craftly compiled sound track - all of 3 songs thats continously played. very slick.

You should check out "Mood for love", another Wong Kar-Wai film, starring Tony Lueng and Maggie Cheung. Really brilliant stuff.

If you want to see Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung play completely different roles, you should check out "Ying xiong" (Hero). Jet Li is in it too and man can he act.

The other director I have been impressed with is Takeshi Kitano. "Kikujiro" reminded me so much of a Mallu flick. I can even see Srinivasan play the lead role.

BTW, why was the viewing of "Happy Together" aborted?

didnt realise it was a gay flick. i would have been much better prepared if i had known! the opening scene was a bit too much. apparently its set in argentina with wonderful photogrpahy and all.

i have the hero vcd. need to watch it. saw a jap flcik called 'zatochi' about a blind massuer + samurai. hilarious and deadly action.

try and watch this movie called 'one night in mongkok'. super action too.

Zatoichi is a Takeshi Kitano film. Awesome stuff. I think it is the 27th Zatoichi film. The others were done during the 60's, 70's and 80's starring ShintarĂ´ Katsu and was more of a pulp action variety.

The best series in the pulp action variety in my opinion is "Lone wolf and cub". Check it out if you can find it there.

Saw yet another Wong-Kar Wai film last weekend. One of his earlier movies called ' The Days of being wild'. very dark though. Got everyone in it - maggie cheung, tony leung, jackie cheung, karina lau and andy lau.

I just bought the soundtrack for "In the mood for love". In the sleeve there is a small note from Wong Kar-Wai about how the movie is a follow up to "Days of being wild". Did you find that to be true?

Havent watched 'In the mood of love', so cant factually comment. But there is some connection I think - because Tony Leung appears in the final scene of 'Days of being wild' and I was told that was Tony Leung as he appeared in the mood for love. And besides, Maggie Cheung was left dry, desolate and hungry for love in the end of 'Days of..'.

Watched 'In the Mood for Love' yesterday. Very beautiful movie indeed. It fits well between 'Days of Being Wild' and '2046'. There are scenes, music which cuts across the three movies.

You are right, Maggie Cheung looks very elegant. And my regard for Tony Leung is only growing. Watched all the interviews with the 3 of them - very interesting.

Finally you and Zen saw the movie. Yes, Tony Leung Chiu Wai is the man and Maggie Cheung is the babe.

Have to say it mirrors my life now in many ways. Only thing left to do is find a tree. Maybe in Thripunithura...
